Das Land Baden-Württemberg hat der SWEG (Südwestdeutschen Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft) den ÖPNV-Innovationspreis in der Kategorie ‚Kundennutzen durch Digitalisierung‘ verliehen. Anerkannt wurde der Preis für das kostenlose WLAN-Angebot in Bussen und Bahnen der SWEG, das als erstes Verkehrsunternehmen in Baden-Württemberg den Gratis-Internetzugang im großen Stil bereitstellt. Dieses wurde zunächst im kompletten Streckennetz der Ortenau-S-Bahn eingerichtet, mit Startschuss September 2015. Heute  kommen die Fahrgäste in rund einem Viertel der gesamten Flotte im SWEG-Gebiet in den Genuss von kostenfreiem PWLAN.

Realisiert wurde dieses Projekt mit Wireless Routern von NetModule. Sie sind zertifiziert, schock- und vibrationsfest und eignen sich für den Einbau in platzreduzierten Umgebungen, die hohen Temperaturschwankungen ausgesetzt sind. In den Fahrzeugen fungieren sie als WLAN Access Points für den mobilen High Speed Internetzugang der Passagiere. Diese profitieren vom denkbar einfachen Zugang und dem Ausbleiben von störender Werbung, dazu kommt die technische Sicherheit des Systems. Es ermöglicht zudem die unterbrechungsfreie Übertragung von Fahr- und Betriebsinformationen von der Zentrale aus auf die Endgeräte, wobei der Austausch aller relevanten Informationen dank bidirektionaler Kommunikation im Sekundentakt erfolgt.
